On Your Marks, Get Your Wallets! - The Sun
The last government left this country with a lot. The bad far outweighing the good, it must be said. However, aside from the obvious debts and howlers, they did (somehow) manage to secure the 2012 Olympic Games for the country.
A good job was done, and after Russia and Qatar managed to win the bids to host the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, we can only assume a lot of schmoosing was done by Lord Coe and his cronies.
When the figures are released though, it does make one wonder at how much the cost of seeing the world’s premier athletes will cost. Firstly there is a £2.5bn bill to foot. We as tax payers, even those who don’t go to the games, will see an increase!
If you do manage to get to one of the events, then prepare to have your wallet at the ready again, as expect to pay top notch fees for the privilege of sitting in the same stadium as the likes of Bolt and Ennis et al. I say Usain Bolt, but what are the chances of getting a ticket? His controversial doping programme and history of sprinters been drugs cheats pours more scorn on what could be a fantastic event.
Finally, we are told that the games will leave a legacy for us? How? I’m from the north. I do not support West Ham United, so doubtful will see my football team at the Olympic Stadium and nor do I swim, so I won’t be using that venue either.
