BBC Hijack Murray's Magical Moment

As Andy Murray stood there clutching gratefully, and almost disbelievingly, at his Wimbledon trophy in the baking heat of SW19 late on Sunday afternoon, he was being grilled – in the loosest sense of the word – by the ferocious and provocative prober that is Sue Barker.

“What were you thinking when serving for the match?” proffered Barker.

“I remember it as if it was two minutes ago, Sue, mainly because it was. I was thinking how much I want to take Sir Bradley’s crown and get more public votes than Leigh Halfpenny or Graeme Swann,” he responded as quick as one of his cross-court fizzers that had seen him defeat world number 1 Novak Djokovic in straight sets.

OK, so we might have slightly altered what the Scot said. However, the gist of the above is what some people were thinking – “Oh, crikey, BBC Sports Personality of The Year 2013 right there, when do the phone lines open?!”

You could almost hear the producers screaming in Barkers ear: "We need more footage! Get him to blub again like last time!"

One of the BBC’s trusty ‘SPOTY’ presenters, Jake Humphrey even announced that the nation’s new darling had actually already won the contest and, in the process, made a knight of the realm.

How premature, and furthermore, how unfortunate.

BBC weren't the only bare-cheeks on show
The BBC are kidding themselves and, sadly, some of the British public if they think that the pinnacle of sport is to be patronised by a public vote at the end of the year, rather than competitors beating their opposition in their respective disciplines.

When the aforementioned Wiggins was peddling around the Alps clad in the Maillot Jaune a year ago, was he thinking “I wonder if I win Sports Personality, will Sue invite me on A Question of Sport”?

So, over to you Mr Murray, you are Wimbledon Champion, you’ve ended the 77 year wait – it was a wait, not an absence – but you’re going to have to hang around a few more months for the big one, and then you can tell us what it feels like...to have the big eared golden trophy that is Gary Lineker on stage next to you!
